Thanks for the great read James. I’ve been struggling with business vs. family time and these ideas will certainly help.

One rule I always abide by is to have at least one day a week where I don’t work. That way, the family knows for sure that they’ll have my undivided attention.

Hopefully I can increase this to two days a week soon.

Nice read James, and I certainly feel for you. My reasons for freelance were much and such the same, to try and spend more time with the family.
Mind you, it did take me a long time to build a reasonable balance between the two.
It is really difficult, I actually ended up taking on less clients, thus less work and money...
this did work for me.

Great advice, James!
I have separate emails for personal and work and this works very well. Mostly because I leave my work email open while doing work and don't get distracted by personal emails.

Another idea I might suggest is getting a dog. Dogs require walking at least twice during the day. (I suppose children require exercise as well, but I don't have one of those so I don't know.) Either way it's a great excuse to take a break and get some fresh air and exercise.
I find it's best to do this at the same time every day, that way it becomes routine.
